Summary or Abstract : Alcohol dependence (AD) is a clinically and etiologically heterogeneous disorder. The goal of this study was to explore AD subtypes among a sample of 1, 248 adult siblings, all of whom met DSM-IV criteria for AD. Subtypes were based on comorbid disorders. Indicator variables included probable dependence on six classes of drugs: cannabis, sedatives, stimulants, cocaine, opioids, and hallucinogens; nicotine dependence, major depressive disorder, antisocial personality disorder, neuroticism, novelty seeking, and early alcohol use. Latent class analysis identified a 4-class solution as the most parsimonious description of the data. The probabilities of the indicator variables generally increased across the four classes. However, the probability of drug use disorders varied within and between classes. Neuroticism, depression, antisocial personality disorder, and early alcohol use were partially consistent with increasing AD severity across classes. We conclude that in this sample, AD subtypes differ qualitatively and lie on a spectrum of increasing severity.
