Summary or Abstract : This thesis project is designed to be an insight into the cultural and socio/ecological factors involved in designing a Comprehensive School Guidance Counseling plan for Native American campuses. It addresses some of the major challenges that many of these rural, isolated communities endure, from extreme poverty to substance abuse, domestic violence, and family fragmentation. These issues play a prominent role in the growth and development of the students, impacting them socially, emotionally, academically, and spiritually. A guidance plan, based on the American School Counselor Associations' (ASCA) framework, should be designed with respect to the culture and traditions of Native American peoples. These aspects vary greatly between the different tribes and even between different communities within the tribes. This thesis takes a beginning look at some basic considerations necessary for establishing a program aimed at building students' sense of identity, thus creating more successes academically, individually, and within the communities as a whole.
