Summary or Abstract : In the field of genetic counseling, it is important that counselors have characteristics of genuineness, unconditional positive regard, nondirectiveness, and empathy, however having these qualities may cause genetic counselors to experience compassion fatigue, satisfaction, and burnout. We hypothesized that genetic counselors with the personality characteristics of perfectionism, controlling, and the desire to be liked would self-report higher instances of compassion fatigue and burnout. Those who reported higher compassion satisfaction scores were hypothesized to have a specific personality profile that protects against compassion fatigue and burnout..
