Summary or Abstract : Twentieth-century history is littered with the ravages of despots, who, like Prometheus, sought to claim divinity for themselves. Most seized power and demanded progress through submission and cruelty. The epitome of this personality-type was Joseph Stalin, whose residual influence is still felt in much of the world today. To understand and predict the rise of these Promethean autocrats, this psychohistorical study will trace Stalin's lifespan development from birth to age twenty-one (1878 to 1899). The most accurate biographical, Russian Imperial, and Caucasian history is examined and assessed within a framework of developmental psychology. This study will construct a comprehensive portrait of Stalin's youth and create a model for understanding the primary forces that formed Stalin the tyrant. These insights will aid in the development of a predictability chart for determining leaders who might evolve into twenty-first century Promethean Men..
