Summary or Abstract : The purpose of my dissertation is to create a pedagogical program that has as its goal the development of critical capacities in students. To begin, I survey the literature on critical pedagogy. I argue that critical pedagogy's aim, which is to create decentered, critical subjects that emerge in dialogue, cannot be addressed adequately due to the theoretical shallowness of the work. I then carry out a reconstruction of the critical pedagogy literature, with emphasis on its epistemology and its theory of dialogue. Drawing on work from critical social theory and cognitive developmental psychology, I develop a dually structured theory of cognition and interaction and develop concepts that can be concretized into specific pedagogical practices that assist in the facilitation of critical discourse.Having articulated a theoretical position that addresses the structure of subjective understandings as well as the underlying logic of interaction structures, I then outline a classroom program that attempts to develop critical capacities through particular forms of interaction and critical reflection. I apply the insights of the theory of interaction, and the concepts for facilitation, to two empirical studies. The results of the studies show support for the theory of interaction structures and a theory of dual structuration. However, the emergence of a higher-order discourse did not materialize in the empirical conditions. The results of the experimental studies and future directions for theory and research are discussed..
