Summary or Abstract : There are several ways to justify testimony-based beliefs. One is to appeal to the essential nature of language, through which testimonial knowledge is transmitted. Another, Reidian, approach argues that it is a Natural principle without which language would not be possible that speakers are generally veracious, and hearers generally trusting. Thus, this type of argument centers on the reliability of the speaker. This paper explores a third option for justifying testimony-based beliefs. It argues that trust is a necessary condition for acquiring testimony-based beliefs, and since trust is a cognitive state of the hearer, it follows that testimony-based beliefs can be justified by proving the reliability of the cognitive process leading to trust. I shoulder this claim by using data from developmental psychology, which illustrate testimony's underlying social-cognitive processes. The argument assumes reliabilism, and it assumes that a process must be a cognitive process. I defend both these assumptions..
