Summary or Abstract : 188 speech-language pathologists responded to a survey regarding their use of counseling with clients diagnosed with psychogenic voice disorders. The questionnaire was designed to (a) determine if counseling skills utilized by speech-language pathologists to treat psychogenic voice disorders were acquired at the college level or if the skills were obtained after college, (b) evaluate the effectiveness, as measured by participant opinion, of the counseling skills taught at the college/university level, (c) verify whether speech-language pathologists would select additional training for treating clients with psychogenic voice disorders, and (d) provide insight and direction for the training/education of SLPs in the areas of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with psychogenic voice disorders.Survey results indicated more respondents received counseling skills related to PVDs during their academic experience as opposed to post-graduate experience. The impact of university level training on respondent confidence levels is limited. Post-graduate training and clinical experience (post-graduate have a greater impact upon respondent confidence levels than does university level training. The majority (63 ) of respondents indicated the desire for additional training. Respondents appear to be least confident utilizing counseling to treat the underlying etiology of the PVD..
