Summary or Abstract : The American Psychological Association's (APA) Committee on Accreditation (CoA) requires broad and general training in clinical psychology doctoral programs. Because the knowledge base in clinical psychology has become complex and expansive, specialization within the field has become important for clinical training and practice. The present investigation examined the websites of all 231 active accredited clinical psychology doctoral programs and found that the majority offered specialty training across 63 different areas of specialization. The most common areas of specialization were child psychology, health psychology, neuropsychology, forensic psychology, and family psychology. One third of the programs offering specialization required that all students complete specialty training. The most common format for specialty training was a specialty track, which included required or recommended coursework and practica, within a general clinical training program. A greater percentage of PsyD programs than PhD programs offered specialty training. PsyD programs also offered more areas of specialization than PhD programs. Very few programs made statements regarding the level of preparation for specialty practice that could be expected upon graduation. Results indicated that specialty training was very common among accredited programs despite APA CoA requirements that doctoral programs offer broad and general training..
