Summary or Abstract : Each year graduate programs across the country select students to begin the training process of becoming counselors. The admissions criteria for these programs include such measures as GPAs, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation; but no admissions criteria seem to address the central issue of whether or not these candidates demonstrate the core interpersonal qualities foundational to effective counselors. This research addresses the question of whether or not a specific personality test such as the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) might add incremental validity to the typical approaches used to identify strong candidates for graduate clinical psychology education. Can it provide a unique lens to clarify whether or not program candidates already show evidence of empirically supported therapeutic relational qualities? Thirty-six first-year graduate clinical psychology students participated in the current study. They completed a videotaped role-play therapy session where they were the therapist. Raters assessed the videos and rated the participants on scales measuring warmth, empathy, and genuineness. Results indicated significant intercorrelations between scales measuring warmth, empathy, and genuineness. However, only one significant finding emerged showing an association between the 16PF and therapist ratings, a negative correlation between 16PF Factor C and measurements of therapist warmth..
