Summary or Abstract : This study provided insight into a change process as it applied to an institution of higher education using a recent change initiative to describe, explore, analyze, and reflect on the experience. Change involves planning, implementation and people. Studies on the complex change process have focused most attention on the first two components of change, leaving the third underrepresented in research. The context for the research was set by recounting the work done on this change initiative from its inception to implementation. The post-implementation phase was the focus of the research. This context-based research provided data that may be helpful in understanding why and under what circumstances strategies work at a particular institution at a particular time. The study used multiple layers of data including participant observation, document review, and employee interviews and focus groups. The study identified what worked and what did not. It looked at specific components that contributed to the success of this change initiative and identified areas where things did not go well. In order to provide a holistic picture of the complex change process, this research focused on how the behaviors and actions of individuals involved in the change might or might not align with Bolman and Deal's (2003) multiple frames as well as how they viewed the benefits and obstacles throughout the process.Analyzing the change through the lenses of the frames, the results indicated that people operated from different frames at different times. All four frames, or perspectives, were experienced as the process unfolded but the use of multiple frames to consider a situation in more than one way was not consciously and deliberately utilized as a tool to guide the change process. The study showed that it is important to be able to assess which frames are most helpful at a given time. It is also important to clarify authority and roles. The study highlighted the importance of addressing the transition phase. The ultimate goal of this research was to identify helpful techniques for managing change. Such techniques include training managers to guide change through the use of such tools as the frames..
