Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this exploratory study will be to examine 852 students on their course within special education from preschool to fifth grade. Students who met New York State criteria for preschool special education services will be followed to determine if those declassified or found ineligible for services during the kindergarten transition later met special education criteria in their elementary school years. Those who transitioned at kindergarten, from preschool special education to school aged special education, will be followed to examine changes that occurred in classification and their special education program over time. Finally, the educational history of a group of fifth graders, classified within special education, will be explored to examine trends..
