Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this project was to explore teenage parenting and the adverse consequences experienced by this population. Although teenage pregnancy has declined in the past decades it continues to be a societal concern. Approximately 750,000 teens give birth annually. Hispanic adolescents have the higher birth rates among other groups. There are many negative outcomes associated with teenage parenthood such as impairments in psychological wellbeing, educational attainment and economic hardship. Research indicates that single teenage parents have high rates of welfare dependence. There are many individual factors that are associated with teenage pregnancy including child maltreatment, substance abuse, intellectual and school achievement. Early childbearing is associated with negative outcomes for both mother and child. Children of teenage parents have been known to experience similar adverse outcomes as their parents. This project provides teenage parenting trends, statistics, outlines the negative outcomes associated with teenage pregnancy, and provides a narrative on my personal experience as a teenage mother, and the many challenges that I had to overcome in order to pursue higher education..
