Summary or Abstract : This paper examines the impact of Canadian Red Cross school-aged disaster program Expect the Unexpected on behavioural change in participant's household emergency preparedness. The program and survey were conducted in the fall of 2008 in Colwood, British Columbia and involved 163 participants. This paper examines three key questions: (1) What impact, if any, did exposure to Expect the Unexpected disaster education program have on the participants' household emergency preparedness? (2) According to research participants, what factors or issues motivated them to change their emergency preparedness (e.g., perception, activities, or resources)? (3) What is the interest level for further Disaster and Emergency Education Programs in classrooms? Three key measures of preparedness used in this study are: (a) knowledge of local hazards, (b) a family evacuation plan, and (c) prepare a kit. The results show that the program did indeed have a positive impact on behavioural change in some participants and caregivers..
