Summary or Abstract : The inclusion of dance in Ontario schools in a formal capacity is a relatively recent phenomenon. The 1998 Ontario Curriculum offered a very rigorous curriculum approach as dance, as well as visual arts, music, and drama, were welcomed into the curricular inner-circle alongside math, science, language arts, and social studies. This research explores the experiences and understandings of K-8 teachers in one school board - the Halton District School Board (HDSB) - that is part of the Greater Toronto Area. Two types of instruments were used: an online questionnaire and round table forums with small groups of teachers. There were 98 teachers involved as subjects in this research. The purpose was to determine the views of generalist teachers on dance and dance education as well as their comfort level in teaching dance, integrating dance, and integrating the arts in general. This research is timely since, in Spring 2009, a brand new Ministry Arts document will be released..
