Summary or Abstract : Though more than half of all postsecondary institutions in the United States offer distance education courses and programs, existing research on distance education is often of poor quality and often lacks a guiding theoretical framework. Because of this, few conclusions can be drawn about distance education in the United States. Using the theoretical framework of institutional theory and resource dependence theory, this study investigated the linkages between key institutional characteristics of degree-granting postsecondary institutions and how these characteristics related to participation in distance education. Three datasets were combined and the multivariate analysis techniques of factor analysis, logistic and multiple regression analyses were used. The results indicated that 93 percent of public institutions and 51 percent of private institutions offered distance education. Distance education enrollments comprised, on average, 19 percent of institutional enrollments for public institutions and 15 percent for private institutions..
