Summary or Abstract

This study examined chronic disease patient education curricula throughout U.S. Physician Assistant Programs. Through survey research, certain key relationships emerged between PA faculty and PA program characteristics and the Effective Chronic Illness Model (ECICM), Bandura's Self Efficacy Theory (BSET) and the Healthy People 2010 targeted chronic diseases. The constructs of the ECICM and BSET are at least minimally present in PA programs nationwide. Findings revealed the majority of chronic disease states and their corresponding patient education were covered in all programs investigated. Faculty familiar with the curriculum and programs that assessed student competency in patient education reported more in depth coverage of the models. Programs that reported more coverage of the overall models and their constructs were correlated with disease specific patient education curricula..
