Summary or Abstract : This dissertation addresses education under the influence of Hindutva values. I concentrate on the Akhil Bharatiya Vidya Bharati Sansthan (Vidya Bharati) the umbrella organization of all educational institutions of the Sangh Parivar. The Vidya Bharati which is the largest network of private schools in India runs schools that are situated mostly in rural areas and in poor urban neighborhoods. By conducting an ethnography in two schools run by the Vidya Bharati in the western state of Maharashtra, I highlight the modes through which Hindutva values are transmitted to young students and to the larger communities they inhabit. I focus on value education taught in these two schools to explore nationalism, secularism, religion and citizenship in the way they are understood and taught to students in the Vidya Bharati schools Maharashtra was selected as the site for this ethnography due to its long history of involvement with right wing politics in the form of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and due to my own identity as a Maharashtrian. I chose Bal Mandir and Vidya Niketan as two schools that were representative of Vidya Bharati's presence in the state--Bal Mandir, which was run directly by the Vidya Bharati and Vidya Niketan which was run according to Vidya Bharati principles of education, but which was administered by a private trust allied with the Sangh..
