Summary or Abstract : Introduction. As the characterization of heritable conditions continues to grow, the genetic knowledge of healthcare professionals is of increasing importance. Objective. To design a new educational approach and demonstrate its effectiveness in incorporating genetics into the daily practice of non-genetic healthcare providers. Methods. The genetic associations of the gastrointestinal system were developed into a lecture which was presented to two groups of non-genetics healthcare providers in New York City (n=40). Participants completed a survey to assess the usefulness, impact, and clinical utility of the gastrointestinal and genetics lecture presentation. Results. Overall, the majority of respondents (82.5 ) indicated that the information would be useful in daily practice. Themes emerging from qualitative descriptions of the most useful aspect, the aspect with the most impact, and the utility of the information in daily practice are presented. Conclusion. The results of this study suggest that our education approach is successful and can be applied to other systems, i.e. cardiovascular and muscular disorders, to create a series of specifically designed lectures aimed at incorporating genetics into everyday practice..
