Summary or Abstract : In this quantitative study, 226 Japanese undergraduate students in English classes at two Japanese universities responded to a 25- question Likert scale survey instrument in English. The instrument was meant to assess students' self-reported technical and linguistic readiness for online study in English. In addition, students were asked if they perceived a need for a graduate degree; would they consider studying online in a U.S. graduate school, and if so, what characteristics would be important to them. Results indicated that although most students reported broadband access from home, they spent fewer than two hours online daily, and few participated in online English discussions. Despite reporting low confidence overall in their English abilities, half of those responding indicated a willingness to study online in English in a U.S. graduate school. The majority of these students also preferred a requirement for at least some study in the U.S. in the online program..
