Summary or Abstract : Although sensory sensitivities in children with autism is a well recognized and acknowledged characteristic of the disorder, few studies have examined the strategies parents use at home and in the community in order to help their children address theses difficulties. This study examined sensory sensitivities from the perspective of the twenty parents of children with autism and asked: Do your children experience sensory sensitivities within daily living activities? What developmental areas do believe to be impacted by the sensitivities? And, what strategies do you use to help your child cope? The results showed that sensory sensitivities are present in a majority of the children with autism whose parents participated in this study and has a significant impact on the lives of these children primarily socially and behaviorally. It also showed that parents have already laid the ground work for potential intervention strategies that if incorporated into the classroom could be the beginning of a more widespread and tolerable sensory experience for the child in the school setting leading to enhanced academic and social growth..
