Summary or Abstract : The purpose of this study was to examine factors related to Indonesian elementary teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching, and the effectiveness of a professional development program in improving their mathematical knowledge for teaching. Subjects consisted of 167 Indonesian elementary teachers. A subset of 80 subjects participated in the professional development program conducted by the author. The Indonesian Educational Survey (IES) and the Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching Geometry Test (MKTGT) were used to collect data on subjects' background characteristics and mathematical knowledge for teaching geometry. Statistical analyses were performed to determine significant predictors of mathematical knowledge for teaching geometry and the effectiveness of the professional development program based on the effect size of subjects' gain in their mathematical knowledge for teaching geometry scores. Subjects' educational background, school type, range of grade levels taught, and reform instructional practice were significant predictors of their mathematical knowledge for teaching geometry. Overall, the professional development program was effective in improving subjects' mathematical knowledge for teaching geometry. The program was more effective for subjects with low incoming mathematical knowledge for teaching geometry..
