Summary or Abstract : Racial and ethnic health care disparities continue to plague the United States, placing a tremendous personal and societal burden on individuals. A culturally diverse nursing work force can help eliminate these disparities and improve the quality of health care that is delivered. However, the nursing profession does not reflect the nation's cultural diversity. If minority nursing students continue to face high attrition rates in nursing programs, the goals of work force diversity may not be achieved. Nursing faculty play a pivotal role in helping society meet the goals of work force diversity by facilitating minority nursing student retention and graduation in nursing schools. The purpose of this study was to explore how nursing faculty who taught in two and four year nursing programs described their role in teaching minority students. This study identified factors that facilitated the retention and graduation of minority nursing students and determined how minority student retention and graduation was influenced by faculty perceptions of their role in teaching minority students. Nursing faculty held mental models about their role in teaching minority students that impacted the retention and graduation of minority nursing students and the overall goal of work force diversity. Findings from this study should help identify how nursing faculty can improve as teachers who promote minority student success in nursing programs..
