Summary or Abstract : Instruction that includes the use of technology can create visual representations of abstract concepts, provide practice opportunities for computational skills, and may maintain student attention levels for longer periods (Bender & Bender, 1996; Kovalchick & Dawson, 2004). Students with special educational needs benefit from multisensory instruction because it provides visual representations of abstract ideas and opportunities to reinforce lesson concepts (Bender & Bender; Bos & Vaughn, 2006). This 20-day study researched whether there was an increase in student attention levels on days when computer software programs were utilized during mathematics instruction. Participants included a class of eight second grade students with special educational needs. Using a triangular approach for data collection (Hendricks, 2009), pre-test and post-test performances, observational checklists with anecdotal notes, and student interviews were analyzed. Results indicated that students maintained attention for longer periods of time during computer assisted instruction and had higher instances of active student responding immediately following computer segments. In addition, most students indicated that they learned best when using some form of computer software program for instruction or practice opportunities. Thus, data suggests that it may be beneficial to utilize computers as a standard teaching tool for mathematics instruction for students with special educational needs..
