Summary or Abstract : Language development may be increased in special needs kindergarten children through the use of songs (Johnston, McDonnell, & Hawken, 2008). The songs may contain a rhythm or melody that may help children increase their phonological, phonemic, and emergent literacy skills (Mizener, 2008). Specifically, this research focused on the use of songs to improve letter recognition and beginning sound identification skills in special needs kindergarten children. The three methods of data collection used in this study were a pretest and a posttest, an observation checklist, and anecdotal recordings. Results indicated that music might have been one contributing factor to an increase in letter identification and sound recognition for these children who participated in this study..
